For a long time, treatment outcome research focused on what treatment was best. In these studies, the people delivering treatment A or treatment B were clumped together and their individual differing outcomes were viewed only as “noise” that got in the way of the therapeutic effect size. When researchers dug into their data sets, they were surprised to realize that factors based on the therapists themselves actually seemed to contribute more to outcomes than the specific treatment approach used. Prior to joining TCC, she was on the faculty of Psychiatry and Psychology at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center. Primarily interested in the psychology of change, she has served as an investigator on numerous NIH-funded grants examining best practices in implementing evidence-based approaches in real-world settings. Much of Alyssa’s work centers on motivational interviewing, a collaborative and empathic communication style that helps strengthen a person’s own motivation and commitment to change.
